Texas Roadhouse Smothered Chicken Copycat: Marinated, Stovetop or Bacon

Smothered chicken with sauteed mushrooms, onions and melted cheese beside mashed potatoes and green beans

Texas Roadhouse smothered chicken copycats all pile sautéed mushrooms, onions and melted cheese on a chicken breast. The three we read split on the seasoning, the cheese and whether the finish happens in the oven or on the stove. Here’s how they compare, so you can pick the one that fits your evening.

We couldn’t confirm the restaurant’s own recipe or its current menu from these sources, and a fourth page we read, Intentional Hospitality (January 2026), calls its slow-cooker version only “inspired by” the chain. We also haven’t cooked any of these, so every amount belongs to the recipe it’s credited to!

How do the three smothered chicken copycats compare?

They agree on chicken, mushrooms, onions and Monterey Jack. Mashed (updated May 2026) marinates the chicken and finishes it in the oven. 4 Sons ‘R’ Us (June 2026) stays on the stovetop. Cravinghomecooked (January 2026) adds bacon and a second cheese.

Look at the time row before you pick. Mashed needs the marinade, so it’s the one to start ahead. The other two go from fridge to plate in about half an hour.

Which smothered chicken should you make?

It depends on how much time you have and whether you want bacon. Choose 4 Sons ‘R’ Us for a quick weeknight, Mashed if you can marinate, and Cravinghomecooked if you want bacon and cheddar on top.

  • Fastest: 4 Sons ‘R’ Us, which lists 503 calories a serving and 30 minutes in total.
  • Most flavor from a marinade: Mashed, which says it can marinate overnight.
  • Bacon and two cheeses: Cravinghomecooked, which recommends shredding the cheese yourself rather than using pre-shredded.

For doneness, Mashed sears the chicken to 145°F, then finishes it in the oven until it reaches 165°F. 4 Sons ‘R’ Us also cooks to 165°F and rests the chicken for about 5 minutes. Cravinghomecooked gives no temperature at all, so use a thermometer if you pick that one.

How do you store and reheat leftovers?

Only two of the three say anything. 4 Sons ‘R’ Us says leftovers keep up to 4 days in an airtight container in the fridge, and can be reheated in the microwave or a hot oven. Cravinghomecooked says to reheat gently in a covered skillet or the microwave, with a splash of water if needed.

Cravinghomecooked also says freezing isn’t recommended, since the cheese and chicken change texture. Mashed has no storage notes. Mashed suggests mashed potatoes or a veggie side, and our Texas Roadhouse mashed potatoes page compares two ways to make them.
