An oven to air fryer conversion calculator turns the temperature and time in an oven recipe into air fryer settings. This one uses the rule of thumb two published guides agree on: lower the temperature and shorten the time. You pick the kind of food, because the guides give different cuts for frozen food, vegetables, meat and baked goods. Many recipes on this site give oven times, so the converter sits beside them.
It gives a range for the time and says so on purpose. Air fryers differ in size and power, so the range is where to start checking, not when the food is done.
These are the numbers the calculator uses. Both guides call them a rule of thumb, and the sources are linked at the bottom.
| Food | Temperature | Time | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most oven recipes | 25 to 50°F lower | About 20 to 25% less | Instacart, 11 Dec 2025. UMaine Extension (7 May 2026) says 25 to 50°F lower and 20 to 50% less time. |
| Meat and poultry | 25°F lower | About 20 to 25% less (general rule) | Instacart. It gives no separate time cut for meat. |
| Vegetables and potatoes | 25°F lower | About 20% less | Instacart |
| Frozen food | Same as the oven | 30 to 50% less | Instacart |
| Cookies and baked goods | About 50°F lower | About 20% less | Instacart |
These rows are the calculator’s own arithmetic applied to the rules above. I have not air-fried these exact batches, so treat them as starting points.
| Oven recipe | Air fryer temperature | Air fryer time |
|---|---|---|
| Any oven recipe, 400°F for 40 minutes | 350 to 375°F | 30 to 32 minutes |
| Chicken pieces, 400°F for 25 minutes | 375°F | 19 to 20 minutes |
| Chicken wings, 450°F for 45 minutes (35 + 10) | 425°F | 34 to 36 minutes |
| Roasted potatoes, 425°F for 30 minutes | 400°F | 24 minutes |
| Frozen fries, 425°F for 20 minutes | 425°F | 10 to 14 minutes |
| Cookies, 350°F for 12 minutes | 300°F | 10 minutes |
Instacart states its percentages, then gives worked examples. Put side by side, the examples for potatoes and cookies are shorter than its own rule. The cuts below are our arithmetic from the numbers on its page.
| Food | Stated cut | Worked example | Cut in the example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roasted potatoes | About 20% | 30 minutes in the oven, 18 to 20 minutes in the air fryer | 33 to 40% |
| Cookies | About 20% | 12 minutes in the oven, 8 to 9 minutes in the air fryer | 25 to 33% |
| Chicken | 20 to 25% (general rule) | 25 minutes in the oven, 18 to 20 minutes in the air fryer | 20 to 28% |
| Frozen fries | 30 to 50% | 20 minutes in the oven, 10 to 12 minutes in the air fryer | 40 to 50% |
Small, thin pieces such as cookies and cut potatoes may need the shorter times. Instacart’s own troubleshooting line says if food comes out dry, start with a 30% time reduction next time. That is why the calculator shows a range, and why the halfway check matters.
A converted time is a guess. For meat, the USDA gives the temperature that counts, measured with a food thermometer.
| Food | Minimum internal temperature |
|---|---|
| All poultry (breasts, whole bird, legs, thighs, wings) | 165°F |
| Ground meats | 160°F |
| Beef, pork, veal and lamb steaks, chops and roasts | 145°F, then rest at least 3 minutes |
| Fish and shellfish | 145°F |
| Leftovers and casseroles | 165°F |
The USDA’s chart was last updated on 14 April 2025 and says to cook to these temperatures as measured with a food thermometer.
“I would get yourself an instant read thermometer. That way you can see how close you’re getting you can test it once it’s out it’ll give you some peace of mind.”r/airfryer, December 2025 (41 upvotes). A single account, not an official source.
Our take: the calculator can tell you when to start checking. Only a thermometer can tell you the chicken is done, and 165°F is the number to check against.
“Not everything needs 400 degrees. You just need to play with it more and check more often. Every brand and type of air fryer is different. You just need to learn yours.”r/airfryer, November 2025 (6 upvotes). A single account, not an official source.
Our take: this matches the sources, which both call 25 to 50°F and the time cut a rule of thumb. Use our range for the first batch, then write down what worked in your machine.
“Was the chicken completely thawed?”r/airfryer, December 2025 (13 upvotes). A single account, not an official source.
Our take: a good question. The calculator assumes the food is in the same state as the oven recipe. Frozen food follows a different rule, which is why it has its own choice in the menu.
Lower the temperature by 25 to 50°F and cut the time by about 20 to 25%, then check early. Instacart gives those numbers as a rule of thumb, and UMaine Extension gives 25 to 50°F and 20 to 50%.
Instacart says 25 to 50°F for most recipes, 25°F for meat and vegetables, and about 50°F for baked goods. For frozen food it says to keep the oven temperature.
About 20 to 25% for most food, according to Instacart. Frozen food is cut by 30 to 50%.
UMaine Extension says preheating helps food cook evenly. Instacart suggests three to five minutes.
The USDA minimum for poultry is 165°F, measured with a food thermometer.
Yes. Choose °C. The calculator converts to Fahrenheit, applies the rule and rounds back to the nearest 5°C.
Rules: Instacart, oven-to-air-fryer conversion guide (dated 11 December 2025) and UMaine Cooperative Extension, Air Fryer 101 (7 May 2026). Safe temperatures: USDA FSIS, Safe Minimum Internal Temperature Chart (updated 14 April 2025). All three were read on 26 October 2026. Reddit quotes are single posters and not official sources.
