About this oven to air fryer conversion calculator

An oven to air fryer conversion calculator turns the temperature and time in an oven recipe into air fryer settings. This one uses the rule of thumb two published guides agree on: lower the temperature and shorten the time. You pick the kind of food, because the guides give different cuts for frozen food, vegetables, meat and baked goods. Many recipes on this site give oven times, so the converter sits beside them.

It gives a range for the time and says so on purpose. Air fryers differ in size and power, so the range is where to start checking, not when the food is done.

The rule for each food type

These are the numbers the calculator uses. Both guides call them a rule of thumb, and the sources are linked at the bottom.

FoodTemperatureTimeWhere it comes from
Most oven recipes25 to 50°F lowerAbout 20 to 25% lessInstacart, 11 Dec 2025. UMaine Extension (7 May 2026) says 25 to 50°F lower and 20 to 50% less time.
Meat and poultry25°F lowerAbout 20 to 25% less (general rule)Instacart. It gives no separate time cut for meat.
Vegetables and potatoes25°F lowerAbout 20% lessInstacart
Frozen foodSame as the oven30 to 50% lessInstacart
Cookies and baked goodsAbout 50°F lowerAbout 20% lessInstacart
  1. Pick the food type and enter the oven temperature and time.
  2. The calculator lowers the temperature by the amount in the table and rounds to the nearest 5.
  3. It cuts the time by the percentage range and shows the shortest and longest time.
  4. Start checking at the halfway mark, and shake or flip.

What the calculator gives for common oven settings

These rows are the calculator’s own arithmetic applied to the rules above. I have not air-fried these exact batches, so treat them as starting points.

Oven recipeAir fryer temperatureAir fryer time
Any oven recipe, 400°F for 40 minutes350 to 375°F30 to 32 minutes
Chicken pieces, 400°F for 25 minutes375°F19 to 20 minutes
Chicken wings, 450°F for 45 minutes (35 + 10)425°F34 to 36 minutes
Roasted potatoes, 425°F for 30 minutes400°F24 minutes
Frozen fries, 425°F for 20 minutes425°F10 to 14 minutes
Cookies, 350°F for 12 minutes300°F10 minutes

Where the stated rule and the worked examples disagree

Instacart states its percentages, then gives worked examples. Put side by side, the examples for potatoes and cookies are shorter than its own rule. The cuts below are our arithmetic from the numbers on its page.

FoodStated cutWorked exampleCut in the example
Roasted potatoesAbout 20%30 minutes in the oven, 18 to 20 minutes in the air fryer33 to 40%
CookiesAbout 20%12 minutes in the oven, 8 to 9 minutes in the air fryer25 to 33%
Chicken20 to 25% (general rule)25 minutes in the oven, 18 to 20 minutes in the air fryer20 to 28%
Frozen fries30 to 50%20 minutes in the oven, 10 to 12 minutes in the air fryer40 to 50%

Small, thin pieces such as cookies and cut potatoes may need the shorter times. Instacart’s own troubleshooting line says if food comes out dry, start with a 30% time reduction next time. That is why the calculator shows a range, and why the halfway check matters.

Check the temperature, not just the clock

A converted time is a guess. For meat, the USDA gives the temperature that counts, measured with a food thermometer.

FoodMinimum internal temperature
All poultry (breasts, whole bird, legs, thighs, wings)165°F
Ground meats160°F
Beef, pork, veal and lamb steaks, chops and roasts145°F, then rest at least 3 minutes
Fish and shellfish145°F
Leftovers and casseroles165°F

The USDA’s chart was last updated on 14 April 2025 and says to cook to these temperatures as measured with a food thermometer.

“I would get yourself an instant read thermometer. That way you can see how close you’re getting you can test it once it’s out it’ll give you some peace of mind.”r/airfryer, December 2025 (41 upvotes). A single account, not an official source.

Our take: the calculator can tell you when to start checking. Only a thermometer can tell you the chicken is done, and 165°F is the number to check against.

What air fryer owners say about converting

“Not everything needs 400 degrees. You just need to play with it more and check more often. Every brand and type of air fryer is different. You just need to learn yours.”r/airfryer, November 2025 (6 upvotes). A single account, not an official source.

Our take: this matches the sources, which both call 25 to 50°F and the time cut a rule of thumb. Use our range for the first batch, then write down what worked in your machine.

“Was the chicken completely thawed?”r/airfryer, December 2025 (13 upvotes). A single account, not an official source.

Our take: a good question. The calculator assumes the food is in the same state as the oven recipe. Frozen food follows a different rule, which is why it has its own choice in the menu.

What to do besides the numbers

  • Preheat. UMaine Extension says letting the air fryer preheat helps food cook evenly, and Instacart suggests three to five minutes.
  • Leave space. UMaine says if the basket is too full the food will steam. Instacart says to cook in a single layer.
  • Shake or flip. UMaine says to shake the basket halfway. Instacart says to shake small items such as fries, wings and vegetables every five to seven minutes.

Limits of this calculator

  • Two sources. The rules come from one grocery-delivery guide and one university extension article. We did not find a manufacturer’s own conversion rule, so check your model’s manual.
  • Your machine. Basket size, wattage and shape change results, and the calculator does not know them.
  • Not every food. Batters, whole birds and large roasts are outside what the two guides cover, so use the food thermometer.
  • Not tested here. I have not cooked each example row in an air fryer, and the page says so.

Oven to air fryer conversion questions

How do you convert an oven recipe to an air fryer?

Lower the temperature by 25 to 50°F and cut the time by about 20 to 25%, then check early. Instacart gives those numbers as a rule of thumb, and UMaine Extension gives 25 to 50°F and 20 to 50%.

How much do you lower the temperature?

Instacart says 25 to 50°F for most recipes, 25°F for meat and vegetables, and about 50°F for baked goods. For frozen food it says to keep the oven temperature.

How much shorter is the cooking time?

About 20 to 25% for most food, according to Instacart. Frozen food is cut by 30 to 50%.

Do I need to preheat an air fryer?

UMaine Extension says preheating helps food cook evenly. Instacart suggests three to five minutes.

What temperature is chicken done?

The USDA minimum for poultry is 165°F, measured with a food thermometer.

Can I use the calculator in Celsius?

Yes. Choose °C. The calculator converts to Fahrenheit, applies the rule and rounds back to the nearest 5°C.
